Painting (MA)

I think painting is not only about individuals, nor should it be limited to canvases or art galleries. It exists in nature, people’s thinking and life, breaking through the limits of time and space. The most important thing is how we find it. In this concept, Arte povera and Earth Art give me a lot of ideas and inspiration. Art exists everywhere in time and space of human life, and everything can be used as the material of artwork. Here comes to the theme that I’m currently working on, looking for the possibility of art in everything in life.

In this search process, the abundant of materials gave me more choices. In contemporary society, the integration between the cultures of Eastern and Western has also broken geographical boundaries. Cross-industry cooperation has blurred the boundaries of different fields. This kind of trans-boundary collaboration has greatly enriched artists’ choice of materials. For example, it is very common for artists to involve high technology into their artworks, such as AI and VR. Here, painting can be visual, tactile, or even olfactory. Artists are seeking the possibilities of future art through cross-border attempts of different materials. This reminds me that I am looking for spiritual things and trying to put them in my work, like the flowing water, the melting snow, or even the smell of the sunlight. Materials and imagination play an important role in my work.

However, it also raises a question worth pondering: Will the rise of materials form a "protective shell" of contemporary art works—people pay more attention to the novelty brought by materials and ignore the expression of art itself and emotions behind the art pieces? The balance between materials and emotions is also something I have been exploring. So I will explore the possibilities of art from the things or states that are common in people's lives. Next, I will continue to discover materials from life and apply them to my works.

The next step, my team members and I are thinking try to organize some experiments exploring the public’s hidden art behaviours, in order to further explore the possibility of art in people's everyday ordinary behaviours. I will focus on art and materials and their relationship with the times, and also make experiments on the role of future materials and future art forms.

In the time and space of human life, there is art everywhere, and everything can become material. It's inspired by my observation of the corner in my studio, every details can become a picture.

Rainbow Wall

Rainbow Wall

"Rainbow wall" is a large-scale practice. As a RCA student in Shanghai in early December, I participated in an exhibition on graduates held by a Chinese sponsor for Chinese graduates who missed the offline graduation exhibition because of the COVID-19. This is an ‘interactive’ wall, the audience can write on the wall at will. I use the way of graffiti to "communicate" with the audience to explore and break through the boundaries between the works and the audience.

The series of ‘trip’ is a project I started in 2019. It's like a diary recording every place I've been and some interesting experiences. In my travel senses, different regions, cultures and even natural environments have different colors and emotions. I use different materials to express them.
