BA: Shanghai Normal University (CHINA) - Animation

MA 1: Shanghai Normal University (CHINA) – Oil Painting

MA 2: University of the Arts Poznan (POLAND) - Painting

MA 3: Royal College of Art (UK) - Contemporary Art Practice – Public Sphere

Personally, art seems to be a part of my life. I will constantly immerse myself into the world of art and keep exploring in the future yet to come. As an animation student studying at Shanghai Normal University, I see the tremendous growth of myself in the art world through engaging in various activities related to art production. I have always a strong desire of pursuing different forms of art, thus it inspired me to major in oil painting as a graduate at the same school after a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, during the exchange period at the University of the Arts in Poznan uncovered me the enthusiasm of contemporary art, so I studied for my second master’s degree in Poland. And RCA is my further pursuit as for now.

Public Sphere

Most of my projects focus on politics and sensitive topics. I noticed that every country has its own constitution and ideology, however, the significance of them is to bring greater benefits to society. In China, artists are not encouraged to touch these sensitive areas. I'm living in Europe now, in comparison with living in China, the environment of art is more open, so I really cherish the opportunity to create what is not allowed to be exhibited in China.

I have made some artworks related to politics in Europe, but this is my first time to create sex objects. Because of the conservative Chinese cultural background, I'm keen on making artworks of sensitive topics in Europe. In western countries, people can exhibit sexual artworks in galleries, but in China, many excellent sensitive projects have been withdrawn by censorships. The Chinese government is really sensitive to controversial topics such as sex, so pornography is a taboo. On the other hand, China has the largest population (1.4 billion) in the world, which means sex happens every second. This is one of the essential parts of human life, just like staple food - rice. As a Chinese person living out of China, I installed my works in a church in Europe. For Catholics, it's prohibited to have sex before getting married. Even in some religious countries like Poland, Italy and so on, the authority of religion is more powerful than the government. My work is concerned with the controversy of sex. I want the viewers to question whether sex objects in churches is controversial. I put a YouTube link below and you can watch how the group of installation work. Also there's one link to the performance. If you click the first picture, you can launch the video.

Lower and Upper Classes(detail)

What's the relationship between the lower and upper classes? In Chinese, we also call upper classes "superstructure". Social status is just like a block of architecture, which is divided into different layers. We must keep a balance between the upper and the lower to maintain the reaction for a reciprocal society. On one hand, the upper always want to control the lower. On the other hand, life, culture and economic forms of the lower class have a close influence on the upper class.
